The “Information” view

When you open a postcard, four views are displayed: the black-and-white original, the colorized version, the place today (Look Around or Street View) and, at the bottom right, the Information. This last view tells you where the postcard was probably taken and, if you know the place, lets you help correct its position, its address or its picture. Your suggestions are reviewed before being applied for everyone.

1. Address, position, identifier

At the top of the view: Probable address, Probable position (latitude, longitude) and Id (the postcard's reference).

  • A click on one of these lines copies it to the clipboard; a “Copied to the clipboard” banner confirms it for a few seconds.
  • Handy for pasting the address into Maps or a GPS, or for quoting a specific postcard (its Id) in a message to us.

“Probable”: the position of old postcards was deduced from their caption. It is often accurate to the street, sometimes only to the village.

2. The description

The postcard's text (its caption, read automatically or typed in). A click copies it too.

3. Correcting the picture (orientation)

Some postcards were scanned lying on their side, upside down, or twice (front and back side by side). In Suggest an image correction:

  • choose an icon: half width, rotate +90°, −90°, 180°, or back to the original. The picture changes at once, as a preview;
  • if you are happy with the result, click Apply & report the correction. The correction joins the sending banner (see § 8).

4. The location map

A small map shows where the postcard is placed.

  • Origin: the postcard's recorded position.
  • Look Around / Street View: the place you went to in the street view, if it differs from the origin (see § 7).
  • The zoom slider sets the visible area, from 100 m to 10 km. Recenter goes back to the origin.
  • So as not to get in the way of scrolling the view, the map is locked: it becomes movable with your finger for 20 seconds as soon as you touch the zoom slider.
  • Long press on the map: the spot you point at becomes the new suggested position (the address is found automatically).

5. Entering an address or a GPS point

The Address / GPS for Look Around field accepts:

  • an address: 12 rue de la Paix, Honfleur;
  • or coordinates: 49.4189,0.2331 (latitude, comma, longitude).

Confirm with the ➜ arrow or the Return key: the point becomes the suggested position and the map centers on it. If the address cannot be found, an “Address not found” message is shown.

6. Churches and heritage

Many postcards show a church, a castle, a monument. The ✝ Churches and ⌂ Heritage (historic monuments) buttons show these places on the location map.

  • purple dot: a church; brown dot: a monument.
  • A click on a dot puts its GPS position into the field of § 5: check it, then confirm with ➜.
  • A long press on a dot picks it directly as the suggested position, with its name and town.
  • The button shows how many places are displayed; click it again to hide them.

7. Correcting from the street view

Walk around in the “today” view (full-screen Look Around, or Street View) until you find the postcard's viewpoint. Back in Information:

  • the new address, the town and the distance in meters are shown in yellow;
  • the mention (unreliable) flags an address without a number, a crossroads, or a street other than the recorded one: check before suggesting it;
  • click Correct the address from Apple Look Around (or from Google Street View, or from the entered value if you used § 4 to 6).
  • With Street View, Save the view orientation also suggests the direction of the gaze (heading and pitch) that best matches the postcard.

8. Sending your suggestion

As soon as a correction is ready, a yellow banner Update detected for this postcard sums up what has changed (position, address, orientation…).

  • Click Suggest a change: everything is sent at once.
  • A green panel confirms: “Suggestion sent — it will be reviewed before being applied”.
  • On your device, the postcard takes the new position right away, and the street view moves there.
  • If it fails (network…), the button turns red: click to try again, nothing is lost.

Your suggestion is visible to other users only once it has been approved. Until then, if you run a new search, the postcard goes back to its original position.

9. Reporting a problem

At the very bottom: Report a problem, send a suggestion. Damaged picture, wrong town, duplicate postcard, an anecdote about the place… write freely.

  • Your email address is optional: give it only if you would like a reply (it is remembered for next time).
  • Click Send the report.

Thank you! Every correction makes the map of the France of yesteryear more accurate for everyone. See also the tutorials.
